Wandering through Hyde Park

My first stop after visiting the palace was going to Hyde Park. I have been told by friends and family to make sure to visit this place. Luckily, it was about a ten-minute ride on the underground from where I was staying. So afterward, I can have a friendly chat with the Air BnB host for a little bit. I took the train and got out of the nearest station to the park.

Hyde Park’s entrance was interesting. It reminded me of Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Just with an artistic image of a unicorn and a lion. I have no idea what they are supposed to mean. It just looks different than all the parks I have been too. So, I had to appreciate the uniqueness. I mean just look at it. It’s as if, the unicorn and the lion are dancing.

Once inside, I was shocked at how similar it was to Central Park in Manhattan. A big park in the middle of the city. It almost makes you forget you are in one of the world’s biggest metropolis.  I started walking around, I kept looking at how people were interacting. Everybody was relaxed and enjoying their time. It felt like Central Park without all the stress. Also, without the horse droppings. No need to watch your step here. The locals at this park look like they were genuinely enjoying their time.

I stumbled across a little garden near the entrance. I went inside to have a look. I took out my camera to take photos for you all. To my annoyance, the moment I was seen with my camera was the moment I became a photographer for random strangers. They asked me to take pictures of them with their phones. Me being the nice guy I was raised to be, I couldn’t reject the requests. I ended taking pictures for two different couples in that part of the park. I just couldn’t say no at the moment. They asked so nicely.  Of course, none of it was with my camera. I charge for that. I’m not that nice.

After about 10 mins, I got back to my mission of taking photos for you all. The beauty of the flowers really made me appreciate nature. Sometimes you tend to forget, how prefect nature can at times. Even though I was alone, my smile and face exhaling any negativity. Parks just have this effect on you. It’s almost like time slows down and you are able to enjoy being in the moment to the fullest.

Relaxing and reflecting by the Victoria Memorial

After the disappointment at the Buckingham palace, I decided to walk towards this beautiful statute. It had a fountain in the front that I had to go see. At that time, I was unaware that it was called the “Victoria Memorial.” However, what I did knew that it had some importance. I mean it’s in front of the palace, it has to be important for the Queen wants to see when she looks out of her window.

The closer I got to the statue, the more groups of sitting tourists appeared. Everybody was taking selfies with their long selfie sticks. Luckily, this was not near a cliff or some high edge. The tourists were more worried about the angle of their photo than their footing. Saw a few people trip and almost fall.  Selfies are probably the number one leading cause of tourist injuries.

Went down the stairs towards the fountain. I wanted to take another photo of this statue. Saw more tourists doing potentially dangerous stunts. I can’t believe they are doing this for a photo that they can post on social media. The length people go just to show off on social media. It’s never a dull moment.

Got to the fountain, started taking in the moment. Hard to believe I was in London. After traveling so much, you tend to get lost in the moment and not have enough time to reflect. This was a perfect stage to relax and really take in the experience of being in the capital of the British Empire.

Looking at the fountain water, reminded me of my time in Argentia. I felt happiness again. The disappointment of not seeing the changing of guards left. There was no emotional war going on inside now. The only emotion I felt was peace and joy. This trip has reminded me just how important is water. Just staring at bodies of water can be so relaxing.

Maybe because my family comes from a Caribbean island, water has always been majestic to me. Something that creates life and can take it away at the same time. Water being a substance that is not alive, can have emotions. When in anger, water creates storms and tidal waves. In times of peace, it can heal. There is a lot of different ways water is used in physical and mental therapy.  Almost like there is a higher form of intelligence behind it. Glad, I got to reflect by the memorial dedicated to Queen Victoria.

Seeing the Buckingham Palace

I usually dislike the whole monarch thing. However when in Rome, do as the Roman. So, do as the British do. Glory to the monarchy, I guess? Decided to go to the Buckingham Palace on a whim. Been told by my host to go there before 11 am to see the changing of the guards. So, thus my adventure began.

When I got to the entrance, you are bombarded with fellow tourists. Everybody wanted to see this famous palace. This somewhat made me more excited because there seemed to be a big hype around this landmark. It lead me to take my camera out early.

Of course, the moment I took my camera out and started to photos. It made me into a huge target. A target for people wanting their photos taken. I keep getting asked to be the camera guy for a few photos. I really should start charging people next time. Maybe two dollars per photos. That hefty price might make them leave me alone.

Once inside, the palace didn’t really looked anything special to me. Everyone around me seemed in awe of the building. After going to Norway, the Buckingham Palace looks similar to the Norwegian counterpart.

The main reason why I came here was for the changing of the guards. After waiting for about 20 minutes, I took a look at my watch. It was 10 minutes past 11 am. Still no change of the guards. The main event of my day seemed to have been canceled. Walked around to see that it was canceled due to a charity walk. A little disappointed, I made the best of my time. Saw the guards stand still from a far. There’s a moral to this story. Traveling don’t always go according to plan. Just embrace with what you got and go with the flow. Life is so much better that way.

Sorry for posting on Sunday. Everything has been very eventful in nyc lately.

Going to the Buckingham Palace and stumbling across a marathon

On my way to the Buckingham Palace, I came across an event. It was at Green Park when I noticed all these people gathering around. For those who don’t know, you must pass Green Park in order to get at the entrance of the Palace. The park was surrounded by DJs playing loud music and portable bathrooms.

It was crazy that I stumbled across this. The environment felt like a concert for a famous artist. Everybody was going around with water bottles and sitting mats. This gave me memories of the concerts back in San Francisco’s golden gate park. It was such nostalgia.

Started walking further into Green Park towards the palace by following the signs. It’s surprising to see how green the parks are in London. Yes, we got beautiful parks in the USA. However, you still feel like you are in a city. Here in Green Park. made me felt like I was in a country side. Of course this was when I was away from the marthon.

Got into the entrance of the Palace, I was stopped by the event offers. We were not allowed to cross while the runners were in the way. Who would had thought this event would affect my time at the Buckingham Palace.

Eventually, the runners left and gave us a clearance. I started walking towards the palace. Couldn’t wait to see what this landmark had in store.

First impressions of London/ Christmas in May?

After a 7 hour sit-down, I landed in London. My first thoughts about this city were how friendly the locals are. I could tell I wasn’t in New York anymore. The attitude of the people was down to earth. The complete opposite of the Big Apple. Where New Yorkers are lost in their heads. It’s funny how I went to Ireland a month before. Should had just stayed in Dublin and took a ferry to the UK. You never know where life is going to take you.

Took the Heathrow express train from the airport into town. Took the local underground train to get to my host’s location. Asked a few random Londoners where to go. They were more than happy to show me the right way.

Once I was pointed towards the right direction, I came across a Christmas march. It was a group of West Africans called Kimbanguist. They were celebrating the birth of Jesus on May 25th. I was baffled and interested at this expression of their community. For starters, I never expected a group of Christians to celebrate this holiday at this time of the year. Second, anything that has to do with learning a new culture is what gets me motivated to travel more.

Met up with my local host at Starbucks. We went inside his building and he gave me the keys to my room. To my surprise, the way England has built their homes is completely different than it is in the USA. Americans, love their space! The Londoners, not so much. The way homes are built in London are hard to explain. It’s like the first floors are for walking up to the apartments or the living room. However, the floors are like narrow alleyways.

Left my bags and it was time for me to explore. Was so excited to see what the hype was about. I hoped London will up to it’s positive rumors. Of course, I was not let down. This city had made me into a better person.
