Who were the Anglo-Saxons?

This is something that I always questioned living in the usa. The differences between Anglo America and Latin America. What made something Anglo and where did the term Anglo come from? Being in London at the time, I started doing research on the Anglo-Saxons. Thanks to google, it is so easy nowadays to learn about any topic.

Before the Anglos arrived, England was under Roman rule.  We all know that the main official language of the Roman Empire was Latin. If we went with just this part of history, then every part of the Americas that speaks English would fall in the term of Latin America. Well, of course, there is more to it. There was a group of people that the Romans disliked and called them savages. They were called the Germanic people. This is where the Anglos-Saxons start to come in.

After the fall of Rome (395 AD) and a little more than 100 years,  a few Germanic tribes started strongly looking for a new home. They came from, which is now, the Netherlands, Germany, and Demark. Back then it was called Jutland, Anglia, Saxon Cost, and Frisii. As the Anglo- Saxons made their way to Britannia. They settled in places called Essex (east), Sussex (south), and Wessex (west). If you look at the names of where the Saxons settled, you can see where the root words came from. The word Saxons come from the type of knives, the Anglo- Saxons would use. However, from what scholars say, the sex part of the name comes from sax because it was pronounced like sex original. It’s funny to think that when I was a kid, I used to look at streets that were called Essex and laugh. Es in Spanish means is. So, as a kid, I thought the streets meant is sex. Well, doing some research, makes you value and appreciate things in a more interesting light.

The Anglo-Saxons never really considered themselves that term. It was a label given to them by the non-germanic people of Britain. It was a way to distinguish the difference between the two. The Anglo-Saxons spoke what is now called Old English. Eventually, through wars and mixing, the growing population of Anglo-Saxons became the majority. Families of mixed Anglo and Non-germanic had to choose which language/culture, they would grow up in. Families chose to grow up in the Anglo/Germanic culture. Which lead to English becoming the main language of Britain. As you can see, this is why the English speaking parts of the Americas are called Anglo-America and not Latin America. Although French and Latin have heavily influenced English, most of the grammar and core vocabulary comes from the germanic branch. This is why I love history and diving deeper into everything. It gives a better understanding of the world.

Seeing the Buckingham Palace

I usually dislike the whole monarch thing. However when in Rome, do as the Roman. So, do as the British do. Glory to the monarchy, I guess? Decided to go to the Buckingham Palace on a whim. Been told by my host to go there before 11 am to see the changing of the guards. So, thus my adventure began.

When I got to the entrance, you are bombarded with fellow tourists. Everybody wanted to see this famous palace. This somewhat made me more excited because there seemed to be a big hype around this landmark. It lead me to take my camera out early.

Of course, the moment I took my camera out and started to photos. It made me into a huge target. A target for people wanting their photos taken. I keep getting asked to be the camera guy for a few photos. I really should start charging people next time. Maybe two dollars per photos. That hefty price might make them leave me alone.

Once inside, the palace didn’t really looked anything special to me. Everyone around me seemed in awe of the building. After going to Norway, the Buckingham Palace looks similar to the Norwegian counterpart.

The main reason why I came here was for the changing of the guards. After waiting for about 20 minutes, I took a look at my watch. It was 10 minutes past 11 am. Still no change of the guards. The main event of my day seemed to have been canceled. Walked around to see that it was canceled due to a charity walk. A little disappointed, I made the best of my time. Saw the guards stand still from a far. There’s a moral to this story. Traveling don’t always go according to plan. Just embrace with what you got and go with the flow. Life is so much better that way.

Sorry for posting on Sunday. Everything has been very eventful in nyc lately.

Stay safe everyone and remember to wash your hands!

Going to the Buckingham Palace and stumbling across a marathon

On my way to the Buckingham Palace, I came across an event. It was at Green Park when I noticed all these people gathering around. For those who don’t know, you must pass Green Park in order to get at the entrance of the Palace. The park was surrounded by DJs playing loud music and portable bathrooms.

It was crazy that I stumbled across this. The environment felt like a concert for a famous artist. Everybody was going around with water bottles and sitting mats. This gave me memories of the concerts back in San Francisco’s golden gate park. It was such nostalgia.

Started walking further into Green Park towards the palace by following the signs. It’s surprising to see how green the parks are in London. Yes, we got beautiful parks in the USA. However, you still feel like you are in a city. Here in Green Park. made me felt like I was in a country side. Of course this was when I was away from the marthon.

Got into the entrance of the Palace, I was stopped by the event offers. We were not allowed to cross while the runners were in the way. Who would had thought this event would affect my time at the Buckingham Palace.

Eventually, the runners left and gave us a clearance. I started walking towards the palace. Couldn’t wait to see what this landmark had in store.
